The strength of a big-eyed girl
"Loneliness actually makes you feel better and think better." --YOSHITOMO NARA
Nara Yoshitomo's Art Exhibition, which opened in the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in March this year, was organized by world-renowned artist Nara Yoshitomo, who introduced his latest paintings, more than 10 new drawings and his most representative paintings, drawings and sculptures to Taiwanese audiences.
After the exhibition in the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, all 53 works will be exhibited in the second stop of the tour, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. At this moment, although the pandemic in Taiwan is gradually slowing down, we are still living and working hard to overcome the challenges and inconveniences. As for the exhibition in Kaohsiung, Mr. Nara was not stopped by the pandemic. As he promised in March, "I will come again because I can only do the exhibition in person." He came to Taiwan to arrange the exhibition and added 26 exhibits to the Kaohsiung exhibition, including one recently completed painting, eight new drawings, two paintings from 2019 Yamako Sister/ Older and Yamako Sister/ Younger, and 15 photographs from the Traveling Yamako series. In this way, he expresses his encouragement and confidence in Taiwan's fight against the COVID-19, and also soothes people's worries through his works.
In order to get to Kaohsiung to arrange the exhibition, Mr. Nara had to go through another 14-day quarantine, after which he had to follow a quarantine plan and visit only his residence and the museum. Many people have experienced, or are experiencing, the loneliness and monotony of isolation. Some find it unbearable, but Mr. Nara does not. He shared his experience of living in isolation, “Loneliness actually makes you feel and think better. I enjoy being alone, even when I was a child. I'm not as lonely as other people think.” The eight new sketches in the Kaohsiung exhibition were completed during his visit to Taiwan in the spring of this year. The big-eyed girl in each work reveals his state of mind during the isolation period, and the clear eyes convey the strong energy of Mr. Nara's firm step forward on the road of creation. We believe that he can bring great encouragement to the audience in Taiwan once again.
