Yancheng District The Pier-2 Art Center
Prior to its transformation to art center, Pier-2 housed Yanchengpu warehouses for decades. As the once-bustling pier gradually ceased activity, walls around the port were removed, prompting all to rethink the relationship between the ocean and the city. In 2006, the Kaohsiung City Government Bureau of Cultural Affairs beagan supervising Pier 2 art center’s operations and became the only governmental agency to successfully manage a special art zone. For more than ten years, the Bureau has consistently introduced various forms of environmental art, created Instagram hotspots, and expanded the operating area to nearly 20 hectares with 25 warehouses. Annual large-scale events that feature local culture have also gained their own popularity. Their aim is to curate more diverse shows and exhibitions while connecting to emerging cultural and creative industries, and to promote international art exchange by developing the Pier-2 Artist-in-Residence Program. The Pier-2 Art Center is now a cultural hub that actively shapes Kaohsiung's next hundred years.
