For this piece, artist Liu Po-chun used metal materials and industrial technology to symbolize the evolution of human labor and time, smelting scrap metal to form beautiful lines that create a “gentle” piece of art featuring humanistic characteristics that contrast the hard material with soft forms. This urges us to reflect on the social environment and material evolution.
This work was created based on the profile silhouettes of five people, with rough and cold steel bars bent to form the shapes of foreheads, eyes, noses, and lips to elicit a sense of familiarity from the viewer. Liu utilizes these large silhouettes to resonate with his audience and invite them to search for the beautiful faces that they wish to embody.
Giving scrap metal new life reveals an industrial overproduction, urging us to slow down and rediscover the relationship and warmth in human interaction as well as the connectivity between human and natural environments.
