The Presence of Guan Yu was the second piece created by South Korean artist Sung Dong-hun (after Sound Tree) for the Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival, in which he polished naturally formed furnace slag into a chair. Sitting on the chair is a steel and iron-wrought Guan Yu righteously gripping a Green Dragon Crescent Blade. The core concept of art creation is to explore one’s temporal presence. Sung believes that staying true to the present is another “representation” of righteousness, a virtue synonymous with the lore of Guan Yu that Sung conveys through new mediums.
Beside The Presence of Guan Yu is an empty chair, an object that often appears in homes and offices. This empty chair is Sung’s invitation for bypasses to sit and chat with Guan Yu about their presents.
《神隱現身》是韓國藝術家成東勳繼《聽樹》後,二度於高雄國際鋼雕藝術節創作出的作品。選用自然成型的爐渣加以拋光製成椅子,上頭坐著同樣以鋼鐵焊接而成的關公,手持關刀,正氣凜然。
本件作品的創作核心在探討「現在身在何處」。藝術家認為「不煩惱過去,也不擔心未來」此一「忠於現在」的精神,也是「義」的一種表現,而關公是歷史上「義」的代表人物,透過新媒材、新詮釋的關公像,反芻本件作品的「義」。
之所以特別在關公旁設置一張空椅,乃是因為「椅子」常出現在家庭、辦公室等交流場所中,這張空著的椅子,即是藝術家對觀眾的邀請──邀請您坐下來,與關公一起對話,一起思考「現在身在何處」。
