Chen Yu-sheng built a gargantuan suitcase using steel and iron materials for this piece and placed it beside a railroad track. At the top of the slightly tilted suitcase are steel birds. The rusty, varying steel and iron plates add a dimension of color as well as a sense of time and depth that lends the steel sculpture warmth.
This suitcase symbolizes departure, a longing for one’s hometown, as well as a hope of traversing towards the unknown, yet reluctant to part ways. Chen uses materials and symbolism that invokes dialogue with the surrounding environment to inspire viewers’ imagination and interactive connectivity to inspire purpose on one’s life journey.
