Sound Tree, a piece created by South Korean steel and iron artist Sung Dong-hun, combines nature and culture. Sung employs exceptional metalwork presentation techniques to transform scrap metal collected from Kaohsiung’s local steel and iron factories into a lofty tree. The uneven surfaces of steel plates are transformed into tree bark, whereas iron nets and bars are wrought into branches and leaves. The tree tops are decorated with bells that ring pleasantly in the breeze, making the artwork “one with sound.” This piece highlights the characteristics of steel and iron materials that resonate with Kaohsiung’s industrial past. Sung makes use of natural wind effects in his work to create experiences that connect viewers and art in a natural environment.
