Gushan District National Sun Yat-sen University
Established in 1924, the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) was formerly known as the National Guangdong University; its name was changed to honor the memory of Sun Yat-sen following his passing in 1925. After deciding on the location of NSYSU in Kaohsiung,, Yuzhaochuan Architects’ campus design was subsequently selected after a solicitation process. The campus features a traditional Chinese building layout that differs from Western traditions used by most schools. The school gymnasium, library, and activity center were designed by Hanguang Architects (head: Han Pao-teh), Chen Chi-kwan Architects, and Chu Joe-ming Architects, respectively, yet the university’s architectural structures are united by its red brick facade and similar materials. NSYSU is Taiwan’s first school to be situated next to a seaside resort that face the natural scenery of both mountain and sea. Found in the campus are archaeological sites such as the former Sizihwan Thermal Bath Resort, the former Shoushan Cave, and a wartime command post for the president.
