Praise of Love and Beauty, a mosaic collage on the wall of Cheng Shiu University’s Library and Technology Building, was made through appropriation (a method commonly seen in the postmodern era) that transfers The Birth of Venus, a painting created by artist Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) during the Italian Renaissance, to a campus wall. The Birth of Venus is one of the classics created during the early stages of the Italian Renaissance. This painting deviated from the tradition of depicting Bible or religious subjects and instead portrays Greek mythology, and its detailed illustration of human characters made it representative of an important transitional period in Western history. The school appropriated this historical painting on the wall of its Library and Technology Building to emphasize their attention to human culture, signifying university students’ pursuit of knowledge and truth.
