Kaohsiung Museum of Shadow Puppet

The only museum in Taiwan dedicated to shadow puppetry was opened to the public in 1994 in Gangshan, Kaohsiung. After its 2012 renovation, the museum now showcases not only a history and development of the art form, but also provides further context for shadow puppetry with a display of artifacts. Performances and programs focused on enhancing digitally interactive experiences are also held on an irregular basis.
We aim to strengthen the roots of shadow puppetry in Kaohsiung while pushing the boundaries of innovation for sustainable development.

Takao Railway Museum

Kaohsiung Port Station is Taiwan’s best-preserved railway freight station. It was taken over in 2010 by the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs and repurposed as a heritage Museum. Patrons are transported back to the 60s and 70s when railway transportation was at its peak, presenting visitors with an authentic experience. In October 2017, the station was renamed Takao Railway Museum.

Old Fongshan City

This restored area aims to preserve the history and culture of old town Zuoying. With the help of 3D interactive technology, the COFCH museum in Old Fongshan City offers a comprehensive context by tracing urban development from the Ming-Cheng regime to revive centuries of stories.

Farewell, 886 – Cultural Park of Taiwan Military Veteran Village

Kaohsiung features a unique presence of all three military branches that once filled the city with military encampments and officer dependents’ dormitories. Kaohsiung’s military dependents’ living quarters totals almost 90 hectares and is the largest preservation grounds in Taiwan.

Zuoying’s history as a navy basecamp can be traced back to Japanese colonial rule. This populated the district with the largest occupation of navy dependents in Taiwan. Mingde New Residential Quarter, for example, was nicknamed the “Navy Generals’ Village” due to its high residential volume of prominent officials. In 2018, the Kaohsiung Museum of Military Dependents’ Villages was relocated and renamed “Farewell, 886 – Cultural Park of Taiwan Military Veteran Village,” in commemoration of the 886 officially enlisted military dependents’ villages that once spread across Taiwan.

Hamasen Museum of Taiwan Railway

From fishing, salt, and sugar export, to contemporary industrial trade, Hamasen stands testament to Kaohsiung harbor’s legacy. The Hamasen Museum of Taiwan Railway focuses on local history and illustrates the hundred-year trajectory of Taiwanese railways through specific and dynamic portrayals.

Chishan Station Museum

Built between 1913 and 1915, Cishan Station is part of the Ciwei Branch Railway Line, which was once the lifeline of the Taiwanese sugar industry.

Cishan Station is the last remaining station on the Ciwei Branch Line and was pronounced a heritage site in 2005. The station became the Cishan Station Sugar Railway Museum in 2016, preserving memories and telling tales through its classic steam trains and historical architecture.
