Celebrating the city's 100th anniversary in 2024
Here's to it! Kaohsiung's 100 years of good times
In 1924, Kaohsiung underwent an official upgrade from "Kaohsiung Street" to "Kaohsiung City." In 2024, the city will have been established for 100 years, marking another new milestone for this largest harbor city in Southern Taiwan.
One hundred years ago, the Japanese government initiated the construction of railways and ports, establishing a network that facilitated trade, transportation, and human exchange. This increased the industrial capacity and employment opportunities in the entire city, creating a vibrant and dynamic environment that has laid the foundation for the city's sustainable growth. The Kaohsiung port, situated close to the Pier-2 Art Center, serves as a hub for the modernization and internationalization of Kaohsiung City. Following the Second World War, the port’s location at the heart of the city’s infrastructure enabled the swift and efficient transportation of industrial products to global markets. Over time, Kaohsiung has evolved from a southern expansion base of Japan to an industrial city filled with smokestacks to a cultural powerhouse full of creativity. In the last century, the city has continued to grow and transform, gradually becoming a shining new Bay Area in Asia.
We have scheduled a series of activities from August to December of this year. "100 Years of the Good City" will examine the evolution of Kaohsiung City over the past century. "The Good City Tours" are led by experts and cover four themes: industry, ocean, railway, and history. There are 10 themed tours, including marine yachts, waterway systems, screw manufacturing, and the railway industry. Visitors can trace ancient ruins or taste the flavors of the village. The series of trips will take place across the sea and land, leap over the ancient and modern times, and see the traces left by the breakthrough of distance and time and space in Kaohsiung City over the past hundred years. The trips will also allow us to witness the growth and change of Kaohsiung City. Furthermore, the cultural tourism schedule includes a series of lectures entitled "The Good City Lectures." These lectures will feature experts and scholars from various fields, who will share insights on the distinctive development context and urban culture of Kaohsiung City. Additionally, they will discuss the city's history over the past 100 years from different perspectives. Furthermore, there are activities such as the cultural assets building tour and the centennial special exhibition. These are designed to facilitate a deeper understanding of this land through the theme activities and display of graphic historical relics.
Kaohsiung has been a city for one hundred years. We extend an invitation to all interested parties to join us in commemorating this momentous occasion, celebrating the city's centennial elegance, and raising glasses in a toast to the good city of Kaohsiung and its prosperous future.
