2023 Kaohsiung Lion Dance
The Lion Dance Competition is an annual cultural festival in Kaohsiung City. It began as a temple festival in Sishihjia Township, Taiwan's oldest industrial area. In 2010, the Cultural Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government established it as a worldwide lion dance competition and gathering of Taiwanese parade troupes. Over 120,000 visitors have cheered on the participating Lions. Along with the Genting World Lion Dance Championship and the Macau Lion Dance Championship, the Kaohsiung Lion Dance Competition is ranked as one of the top three lion dance competitions in the world. After many years of local cultivation and development, the Kaohsiung Lion Dance Competition not only carries on the culture, but also protects and enhances the value of cultural relics.
A Parade Competition will be held on November 18 and the Lion Dance Competition will be held on November 19 at the Kaohsiung Arena. More than 20 groups and individuals from all over Taiwan and Kaohsiung City who preserve cultural assets such as art, traditional performing arts or folklore are invited to demonstrate their skills and the cultural vitality of Taiwan. A temple stage will be set up to showcase Taiwan's development history and the traditional folk parade. The stage is designed to immerse the audience in the experience of an indoor temple fair.
The Lion Dance Contest brings together groups from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and other teams to compete for the title of Lion King and the grand prize. They will compete to reach the "Flying High Pile" to showcase their lion dance skills. The performance area consists of 21 poles to create the most exciting lion dance space in Taiwan. The venue is equipped with ground level seats to allow the audience to get closer to the lion and feel the sensation of jumping the pile and plucking the greens.
Join us this November as we welcome the triumphant return of The Lion King and celebrate Taiwan's rich cultural heritage. We cordially invite you to come to Kaohsiung to cheer on both local and foreign lion dance teams and experience the charm of folk culture through the fusion of lion competitions and performance arts.
