Dadong Traditional Opera makes its debut!
The “Dadong Traditional Opera” series is soon to debut at Dadong Arts Center! We aim to promote the traditional arts as well as cultivate talents and audiences in Kaohsiung, with five amazing performances that are sure to bring great experiences to all patrons!
This series is a selection of flagship works from the Taiwan Traditional Theater Center and the annual new works of the Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company, brought to you by the Kaohsiung City Government Bureau of Cultural Affairs and the National Center for Traditional Arts. Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company’s Empress Dowager Cixi and Imperial Consort Zhen stars the queen of bangzi opera, Wang Hai-ling, the princess of bangzi opera, Hsiao Yang-ling, and the prince of bangzi opera, Liu Chian-hua, in a new take on the internal struggles and external political disputes of the Qing court. Chun-Mei Taiwanese Opera Troupe and Golden Bough Theatre jointly perform Matinee in the Rain, a production that combines Taiwanese opera with opeila and modern theater to depict a journey that seeks peace in life.
Shiukim Taiwanese Opera Troupe’s new play The Legend of Tung-Chueh Platform features A team Jhang Siu-cin, Jhuang Jin-mei and Mi Sue to reveal the beautiful romance behind Cao Cao's ambition through interpretive song. Yi-Shin Taiwanese Opera Troupe invites the queen of Taiwanese opera, Syu Siu-nian and director Li Xiao-ping to collaborate in Me, Myself, and I. Set in the 1950s and 1960s, the play introduces the audience to Wufeng’s Lin Family and offers a glimpse into Lin Hsien-tang’s life, memories, dreams and thoughts. The Ming Hua Yuan (Tian) Taiwanese Opera Co.’s Drunk Moon serves as finale in an adaptation of Yi Shot Down the Suns and Chang’e Flying to the Moon folklore. Starring Chen Jhao-siang, Chen Li-ciao, Sun Shi-wen, and Wu Yi-syuan, Drunk Moon potrays the gods’ emotional entanglements and the struggles of self and desire.
Dadong Traditional Opera will debut in 2020 under the supervision of experts and scholars in the field, all collaborating to create high-quality plays with innovative contents and exquisite performances. Five plays that span different genres present to you a variety of traditional opera. We welcome all in joining us at the Dadong Arts Center, as we laugh and cry with the emotional performances on stage.
