In 2017, the launch of Monsoon by Slowork Publishing brought forward a wave of new comics in Taiwan. It is a documentary comic anthology for adults, which aims to create a new arena for more diverse Asian comics besides the commercial contents popularized by the Japanese. And by compiling graphic stories based on real-life situations, it presents us with a new genre of “documentary comics.”
Monsoon hopes to celebrate both the grassroots and artistic powers of comics and, while focusing on the lives of ordinary people, present each story in a unique style of its own. This exhibition includes over a hundred selected original comic artworks and hand-drawn miniature models that carefully reconstruct daily life scenes of Southeast Asia.
“Diversity” is a condition typical of monsoon regions; it is also the core value of Slowork Publishing. Through inviting authors from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong, Macao, and the Pacific islands to tell their own stories, Monsoon attempts to redefine Taiwan’s geographical position and lead us venture beyond the confines of Chinese or Japanese culture, which we have been closely connected to, in search of some brand new possibilities.
