Inspired by the concept of combining environments, ecology, and art to echo the history of Hamasen’s (the The Pier-2 Art Center Penglai Sector) rice and sugar export, One Acre of Arable Land in Penglai (2012) is the only art park in Taiwan that features a traditional agricultural landscape theme. This acre of arable land, surrounded by warehouses and previously used to grow rice, injects a sense of green into Kaohsiung’s concrete jungle and serves as a location where experimental art is introduced. In 2019, South Korean architect Yang Sooin built a large-scale outdoor power installation art called “Centreefuge” in One Acre of Arable Land. This installation, when powered, prompts 12 power units to rotate and cause bright green yarn screens at its top to furl and unfurl like leaves and flowers in a forest, beautifying Kaohsiung city.
