Architechture 083：National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)
Fongshan District National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)
The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) resembles a gigantic UFO. As the world’s largest single-roof comprehensive theater, Weiwuying demonstrates Kaohsiung’s boundless nature. The original design of Weiwuying (during the project bidding stage) involved transforming the crowns of trees into a wave-like roof to connect the four performance areas to create a light, transparent, and flowing bubble-like open space. The building’s facade is a continuous, curved surface, with metal plates and flowing forms reminding viewers of ships. The building is accessible from all sides, with various performances delivered in a semi-outdoor space. When piano performances are held outdoors, music imbues the space with the rich emotions that connect people to the urban landscape.
