Architechture 062:Export Processing Zone Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs (Nanzih EPZ)
To urge rapid economic development and enable Taiwanese industrial growth, in 1966, the Government of Taiwan combined its free trade zones and industrial zones to form the Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone (EPZ): the world’s first-ever EPZ. Since its establishment, the Kaohsiung EPZ successfully expanded in foreign trade and investments, giving birth to new technologies and employment opportunities that drove Taiwan’s industrial and economic development. In 1969, two new EPZs in Nanzih and Taichung were founded. Phase I of Nanzih EPZ was completed in Apr. 1971. The main buildings at the entrance of Nanzih EPZ were designed by Haigo Shen & Partners. An Export Processing Zone Administration building located in the center features a neat, umbrella-esque porch. Beside the old Bank of Communications (Nanzih Branch) is Zhuangjing Hall, one of the highlights of Nanzih EPZ which boasts an elliptical sets record for cable-supported roofs, a remarkable engineering feat given the primitive computer technology at the time.
