After the cross-country railway finished construction in 1908, Takao Station was built to accommodate passengers, and to oversee sea and land logistic operations. In 1941, a new Kaohsiung Passenger Station was built in Dagangzhuang (now Kaohsiung Station). Takao Station was renamed Kaohsiung Port Station and dealt specifically in freight transportation. After suffering servere damages in World War II, the station was rebuilt in brick with a wooden roof and its space reconfigured for cargo use in 1947. Today, Takao Railway Museum and Cultural Park is the best preserved freight station in Taiwan, including its platform area and the Northern signal tower, which illustrates the historical image of the station’s illustrious past in sea and land transport.
