Item Description:
Relief carving is used in making these faces, etching the puppet’s facial lines on one surface while leaving the rest blank so that its face is composed of lines. The primus (No. 1 examinee in the Imperial exam) wears a ceremonial court cap, dresses in the garb of civil officials with black boots. His wife wears a phoenix coronet, her ceremonial dress also adorned with phoenix, flower, and plant patterns. The primus couple are main characters in the traditional deity play "Jin Bang" (aka The Married Couple’s Reunion) under the category of “Human Comedy.” This show is usually performed at the end of a series of deity plays, its happy ending representing a satisfactory life.
