Expand, an installation located outside the Gangshan Cultural Center, is the earliest recorded public art piece in Kaohsiung. The artwork uses the root of the Chinese character “expand” (展) as a base, connecting the character to steel wires above an arched door to signify infinite development and expansions into the Universe. An arched door symbolizes a sense of welcome and inclusiveness. Kaohsiung’s earliest public art remains intact outside the Gangshan Cultural Center today. A close examination of the piece reveals the expectations for Kaohsiung’s cultural development at the time, making it a remarkably precious piece of art.
