From the Director
Culture embodies the soul of a city. A vibrant culture not only reflects a city’s character but also acts as a source of empowerment for future progress.
Traces of influence from Kaohsiung’s historical development are most obvious and profound in its spatial design and cultural diversity. These traces are seen in the city’s multiple transportation networks, as well as in Kaohsiung's various roles as a migration hub, military base, and industrial trade center.
Kaohsiung has often been stereotyped as an industrial, polluted, and labor-intensive city; its diverse culture and rich historical background were seldom recognized in the past. Few people know that Kaohsiung is home to the only shadow puppet theater in Taiwan, which houses one of the four remaining shadow puppet performance groups in the country. The city has naval, army, and air force official academies as well as military dependents’ villages. At 85 registered Taiwanese opera groups, Kaohsiung boasts the highest registration count in Taiwan. However, despite the city’s substantial cultural history, how do we adapt, create, and present our individual characteristics in the face of modern impact?
My team and I often discuss how the Cultural Bureau can lead the public as well as visitors in experiencing Kaohsiung’s rich cultural history, exploring dynamic mountains, and discovering the invigorating innovations our city offers. Kaohsiung’s mountains and seas are nourished by our vibrant culture. We continue to pursue our six developmental goals in “Active Artistic Participation / Enrich Citizen's Cultural Literacy,” “Cultivate Artistic Talents / Nurture the Cultural Industries,” “Sustainable Heritage Propagation / Increase Innovative Industrial Values,” “Cultural Resource Equality / Promote Integration and Distribution,” “Strengthen Global Connectivity and Collaborations,” as well as “Develop Cultural Environments / Create Quality Artistic Hubs.” We aim to expand local heritage, embrace international friendships, and extend the city’s vivid beauty by furthering sustainable development.
